Smith Optics has a long history of providing quality products, so when they released the “Boogie Regulator” goggles many in the Airsoft community scrambled to snatch them up. They are available in various shades and colors, as well as boasting vents to disperse heat from the player’s temporal artery (the pesky one running across your head that’s always fogging your optics). They are low profile and lightweight, and for Smith brand they come with a reasonable price tag. But would they stack up to the hype? Let’s take a look at what was found after gaming with the “Boogies” over a course of 6 months.

Build Quality:

When first you remove the goggles you can certainly feel the lightness they were going for. These are the ultimate low-profile, forget-they-are-there goggles. The foam surrounding the lenses is very dense, sturdy and comfortable. The tinted frames dim the light without losing detail. The adjustable band is thick though simple, attaching solely by threading through the lenses themselves. The lenses have a good sight picture through them, not distorting at all. The air-vent line that crosses along the top of the lenses can be slightly distracting at first, but is easily ignored and forgotten after continued use. The toggle switch allowing the user to open and close the vents is tight, and won’t slip or slide without directional force. As far as scratching goes, Smith needed to compromise slightly at this price range and the Regulators will scratch more easily than their higher-end products. However, they are still much more durable than goggles of the same price you find elsewhere, and it will take a decently harsh material to scuff these up.

Compatibility:

Smith Optics Boogie Regulator Eye Protection ReviewFor those of us that use metal-mesh masks it can be hard to find a good pair of eye-pro that really provide a good seal with the rest of our gear. The Regulators have somewhat of a flat arch that doesn’t really lend to covering a mask very well. So unless you have a wide face/head and your mask is equally as broad, you’ll need to modify your mask a little to provide the best seal/protection. For those that use neoprene or a rag to cover their mouth, these will be great- they were designed to fit on your face and the instant comfort you notice when you put them on reflects that. And that’s the interesting thing about the Boogie Regulators- they are a combination of the best from traditional frames and goggles, fitting close to the face with minimal profile, but with the retention not to fly off with the manipulation or adjustment of other gear like helmets and headsets.

FOG?!

Unfortunately, yes. The flaw comes from the design- namely, three things. The strap is quite strong and unless you adjust to the largest size, it will pull the goggles crushingly on to your face, dis-allowing for the second flaw, the air-vent, to vent properly. And the flatness of the lense-wrap means if you try and prop them on the outside of the mask you get little to no seal, as mentioned before. BUT DON’T TOSS THEM OUT JUST YET! There are a series of simple and fast modifications that can quickly make these the great optic they should be:

Smith Boogie Regulator Foam VentSuggested mods- First, take an exacto-knife and cut some extra ventilation. The quality of the foam these ship with means this is very easy. The remaining foam will still have the strength to hold the goggle off your face for ventilation. To aid in that, make sure you next adjust the strap to the maximum size; you don’t want them quite slipping off your face, but almost. The foam will be grippy enough to hold them there and the holes you cut will allow an easier air flow. Now, before a good dose of your favorite anti-fog (heck, it wasn’t even needed after these mods) take a small hand dremel or drill bit and carefully widen the vent holes running along top the lens. Now you don’t need to prop them on the outside of your mask, but can leave them up against your head as the design intended, giving all the benefits of both worlds!

Summary:

Smith Optics Elite boogie Regulator goggles ReviewThe Good: Slim, low profile. Super lightweight with good scratch-resistance. Excellent sight picture, superior build quality in the strap and foam. Very comfortable, and allows the retention of goggles with the simplicity of glasses. Not too big to mess with your cheek weld, not too small to obstruct the peripheral.

The Bad: The strength of the strap and the density of the high-quality foam dis-allows proper venting. But quick and easy mods/adjustments remedy these issues permanently.

In summary, these were designed to be the slimmest, low-profile optic while still being compatible with anything else the player wears. They achieve just that once the player has made personal adjustments to fit their gear and sizing, coupled with a little foam trimming and vent widening. After that, they really standout like they should, and have quickly become the Author’s favorites. Now available, so go grab some!
