Some items earn a permanent place in your pack because they are so obviously utilitarian. Every mountain biker, for instance, knows they need a set of metric hex wrenches and a Torx bit or two-you can tear apart 90 percent of your bike with just those few items. The Leatherman Raptor is not such a tool, unless you drive an ambulance every day. Nevertheless, the Raptor gets the nod for this one reason: When things go from exciting to scary, it can be invaluable.
Just mangled your hand in a wreck and your ring finger is swelling up like a Vienna sausage? Need to cut your hydration pack hose to make an emergency tourniquet? Your average multi-tool isn’t going to help you here, but the Raptor is uniquely suited to saving your bacon. The tool, which received a good deal of design input from medics, features folding, stainless-steel medical shears, a strap cutter, ring cutter, oxygen-tank wrench, ruler, and carbide-tip glass breaker.
You may never feel like you need to break through a car windshield, slice through a stubborn seat belt, cut a bloodied shirt off of someone with a shoulder fracture or shear off your wedding ring, but that’s the thing with emergencies-you never see them coming. And, as everyone with backcountry experience can testify, emergencies happen. The Raptor, then, is the tool for the unpredictable events that have your typical multi-tool sitting on the sidelines, wringing its hands and offering excuses.
So, who wouldn’t appreciate what the Raptor has to offer? Clearly this isn’t a must-have item for the fast-and-light set. While it doesn’t take up much real estate (the six-ounce tool measures five inches when folded), anyone who counts those ounces is going to want a more versatile tool with pliers, a knife blade, etc. There’s no arguing that point.
I bought a Raptor, however, because I’m the kind of person who has a corner of their pack reserved for dealing with worst-case scenarios-that’s where the Raptor excels. While the oxygen-tank wrench is overkill for anyone who doesn’t raise the dead for a living, I have employed those scissors on countless occasions and have been impressed with both their durability and sharp edge. Besides, I’m not keen on slicing away an injured person’s pant leg or shirt with the same knife I use to gut trout.
Bottom line, the Raptor isn’t going to be your first choice for a multi-tool, but it’s a solid addition for anyone prepping for the worst.
